Jacopo da Empoli
Portrait of a Noblewoman Dressed in Mourning
c. 1600
Jacopo da Empoli's 'Portrait of a Lady in Mourning' (early 17th century) is a sombre full-length Florentine portrait of a widow dressed in black, the sitter's face emerging from a dark ground with Empoli's disciplined Counter-Reformation clarity. A refined example of late Mannerist–Early Baroque Florentine portraiture. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
