Saint John the Baptist Entering the Wilderness

1455–60

Giovanni di Paolo's 'Saint John the Baptist Entering the Wilderness' (c. 1454) is a Sienese Renaissance panel from a predella depicting the life of the Baptist. The small figure of the young saint walks out of a city gate into a fantastically patterned landscape of stylised pink and green hills — one of the most beloved early 15th-century images of Christian pilgrimage. Tempera on panel, Art Institute of Chicago.
