The Continence of Scipio

Workshop of Apollonio di Giovanni

The Continence of Scipio

c. 1455

A cassone (wedding chest) panel painted in the workshop of Apollonio di Giovanni (c. 1415–1465) in mid-15th-century Florence, depicting 'The Continence of Scipio' — the Roman general's refusal to take a captured maiden as spoils of war. Exhortations of Roman virtue were favoured decorations for Tuscan marriage chests, and this panel is one of the Art Institute of Chicago's most important early Renaissance Florentine works. Tempera on panel.
