George Cope
Civil War Regalia of Major Levi Gheen McCauley
1887
George Cope's 'Major Levi Gheen McCauley's Civil War Dress Uniform' (1887) is a trompe-l'œil painting by the Pennsylvania realist, showing the dress uniform, sword, pistol, hat, and epaulettes of a Union officer hung against a wooden wall. A textbook example of American trompe-l'œil still life, now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
