published April 25, 1863
Winslow Homer's 'Approach of the British Pirate "Alabama"' (1863) is a wood engraving that appeared in 'Harper's Weekly' during the American Civil War, when the young Homer worked as the magazine's leading illustrator. It depicts a U.S. merchant ship under attack by the Confederate raider CSS Alabama, which destroyed dozens of Union vessels before being sunk off Cherbourg in 1864. Art Institute of Chicago.
