Parthenon Frieze
c. 447–432 BC
The Parthenon frieze, carved in the 5th century BC under the direction of the sculptor Pheidias, wrapped the upper exterior of the cella of the Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis and depicted the Panathenaic procession — the great civic festival of Athena. Some 160 metres in length, the continuous low-relief frieze remains divided today: major sections are in the British Museum (the 'Elgin Marbles') and in the Acropolis Museum in Athens, which displays its portion in a purpose-built top-floor gallery reconstructing the original orientation and the long-running debate over restitution.
