Albrecht Dürer
Young Hare (Feldhase)
1502
Albrecht Dürer's 'Young Hare' (1502) is a watercolour and gouache study on vellum so precise in its observation — every hair, whisker, and claw individually rendered — that it has stood for five centuries as the supreme example of Renaissance nature study in northern Europe. Because of its extreme fragility to light, the original is only rarely shown; high-quality facsimiles stand in for it in permanent displays at the Albertina in Vienna.
