Albrecht Dürer
Praying Hands
1508
Albrecht Dürer's 'Praying Hands' ('Betende Hände', c. 1508) is a preparatory study in brush and ink on blue-prepared paper for the hands of one of the apostles in Dürer's (later destroyed) Heller Altarpiece in Frankfurt. In isolation, the paired hands — one of the most reproduced drawings in the world — have become a near-universal emblem of Christian devotion. The Albertina in Vienna holds the original sheet among the core jewels of Dürer's graphic oeuvre.
