Leonardo da Vinci
Annunciation
c. 1472–1475
Leonardo da Vinci's 'Annunciation' (c. 1472–1475), painted when he was barely twenty in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, depicts the Archangel Gabriel in a carefully foreshortened landscape bringing the news of the Incarnation to Mary, who reads at a classically carved desk. Leonardo's command of spatial perspective and painted atmosphere already announces his future mastery. Held at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
