Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Hunters in the Snow
1565
Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 'The Hunters in the Snow' (1565) is one of the most celebrated winter landscapes in Western art. Part of his series of the Months, it shows a group of weary hunters returning with their dogs from an unsuccessful hunt, trudging above a frozen Alpine village where skaters pivot on green ponds. The bare-black trees and razor-sharp horizon set a panoramic 'bird's-eye' stage that Bruegel's followers would copy for generations. It is a cornerstone of Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum.
