Emanuel Leutze
Washington Crossing the Delaware
1851
Emanuel Leutze's 'Washington Crossing the Delaware' (1851) is a 3.78 × 6.47 m history painting of George Washington and his troops crossing the icy Delaware River on Christmas night 1776 before the Battle of Trenton. Painted in Düsseldorf by the German-American Leutze during the revolutions of 1848 — in part as an encouragement to European liberals — it has become the defining patriotic image of the American Revolution. The main autograph version has hung at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since 1897.
