Temple of Dendur

The Temple of Dendur, built around 15 BC by the Roman emperor Augustus on the Nile in Lower Nubia, was dismantled as part of the UNESCO rescue that saved the monuments of Egyptian Nubia from flooding by the Aswan High Dam. In 1965 the Egyptian government gifted the entire temple to the United States, and it was reassembled inside the Sackler Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it has stood since 1978 as the most ambitious single transplant of an ancient monument into a modern museum.
