Auguste Rodin
The Thinker (Soumaya cast)
1904 (cast)
A lifetime cast of Auguste Rodin's 'The Thinker' (Le Penseur). Originally conceived in 1880–1882 as the seated figure atop Rodin's 'Gates of Hell' — a condensation of Dante brooding over his 'Inferno' — the image was enlarged and serialised in bronze from 1904 on. The Museo Soumaya version in Mexico City, cast before the artist's death in 1917, is one of the most visited examples of Rodin's global bronze diffusion and the centrepiece of the Slim family's encyclopaedic sculpture holdings.
