Vincent van Gogh
Self-Portrait (Van Gogh, Orsay)
1889
The self-portrait that Vincent van Gogh painted in September 1889 in the asylum of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, widely believed to be the last he ever made of himself. The turbulent, pale-blue background and the parallel curling strokes of his jacket form a single calligraphic vortex against which his face emerges with unsettling composure, his hair and beard newly trimmed. He sent the portrait to his brother Theo so that Theo would see him 'with a calm face' — one of the most restrained and psychologically precise of Van Gogh's thirty-odd surviving self-portraits. Now a centrepiece of the Musée d'Orsay.
