Vincent van Gogh
Sunflowers (London)
1888
One of Vincent van Gogh's five autograph 'Sunflowers' still lifes, painted in Arles in August 1888 for the 'Yellow House' he was preparing for Paul Gauguin's arrival. Built almost entirely from variations of chrome and lemon yellow — what Van Gogh himself called the 'yellow of hope' — the picture reduces the bouquet in a simple earthenware vase to a near-monochrome experiment in joyful colour. It has been a centrepiece of the National Gallery in London since 1924.
