Qing Dynasty
Meat-shaped Stone
18th–19th century
The 'Meat-Shaped Stone' ('Ròuxíng shí') is a natural piece of banded jasper carved and dyed in the Qing dynasty to resemble a piece of dongpo pork — a slab of cooked meat with glossy skin, layered fat, and lean muscle. Displayed with the Jadeite Cabbage as one of the National Palace Museum in Taipei's three 'treasures of the land', the object is a playful masterpiece of Chinese imperial craftsmanship in hardstone.
