Market Gate of Miletus

c. 120 AD

The Market Gate of Miletus is a monumental two-storey Roman marble gateway built around AD 120 in the ancient Greek city of Miletus on the western coast of Asia Minor. Damaged in an earthquake, the 28-metre façade was excavated by a German team in the early 20th century and reassembled inside Berlin's Pergamon Museum, where since 1930 it has towered over the same hall as the Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gate — one of the most impressive single transplants of ancient architecture into a modern museum.
