Michelangelo
The Creation of Adam
1508–1512
The central scene of Michelangelo Buonarroti's Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508–1512), 'The Creation of Adam' depicts God the Father — borne aloft in a mantle filled with angels — reaching out to the outstretched, still-languid hand of the first man. The near-touch between the two fingers has become the single most reproduced image in Western religious art, condensing Michelangelo's treatment of anatomy, divinity, and the instant of animation into a gesture of electrical charge.
