Madonna Litta

c. 1490

Leonardo da Vinci's 'Madonna Litta' (c. 1490–1491) is a small panel depicting the Virgin tenderly nursing the infant Christ, the child gazing sideways out of the picture while Mary looks down at him. Though attribution debates continue, most specialists accept at least Leonardo's design and direct intervention. It belongs to the State Hermitage in St Petersburg — one of the museum's most celebrated Italian Renaissance holdings, acquired in 1865 from the Litta family of Milan.
