Universe of Water Particles
2018
teamLab's 'Universe of Water Particles' (2018, continuously updated) is a large-scale immersive digital artwork in which a virtual waterfall cascades down a multi-storey wall; the water is made from hundreds of thousands of individually simulated particles whose interaction with flowers, rocks, and visitors is continuously computed in real time. As guests walk across the floor, the flow parts around their bodies and trailing petals rearrange themselves, making each viewing unique. Produced by the Tokyo-based interdisciplinary collective founded by Toshiyuki Inoko, the installation is a signature work of teamLab Borderless and a touchstone of 21st-century immersive art.
