Vincent van Gogh
Sunflowers (Amsterdam)
1889
One of Vincent van Gogh's most famous 'Sunflowers' canvases, painted in Arles in August 1888 in preparation for Paul Gauguin's arrival at the Yellow House. Fifteen sunflowers in a yellow earthenware vase are built from a disciplined set of yellows — chrome, lemon, ochre — against a paler yellow wall, in Van Gogh's most radical experiment with monochrome colour. The picture has been at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam since its founding in 1973 and is the signature image of the museum.
