Norwegian Landscape

1908–1910

A Norwegian landscape by the Estonian pioneer Konrad Mägi (1878–1925), painted during his Scandinavian travels around 1908. The steep fjord cliffs, pine forests, and reflecting water are laid down in thick Expressionist strokes and unnaturally saturated colour, fusing Impressionist light with a Fauvist palette. Mägi is regarded as the founder of modern Estonian painting; the Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn holds the largest body of his work.
