Caravaggio
The Crucifixion of Saint Andrew
1607
Painted by Caravaggio in Naples in 1607 during his exile after the killing in Rome, 'The Crucifixion of Saint Andrew' captures the apostle lashed to an X-shaped cross finishing his final sermon while the soldier sent to release him is miraculously paralysed mid-act. The tenebrist light, the coarse crowd of onlookers, and the compressed psychological intensity define the late Caravaggio. Acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1970, it is the crowning work of that museum's European paintings galleries.
