Auguste Rodin
The Kiss
1882
Auguste Rodin's 'The Kiss' (1882) immortalises the illicit embrace of Paolo and Francesca from Dante's 'Inferno'. Originally a group for Rodin's 'Gates of Hell', it was extracted and enlarged as an independent work. Several full-scale marble and bronze versions exist; the Musée Rodin in Paris holds the principal autograph marble.
