Self-Portrait (Pablo Picasso)

1901

Painted in Paris in 1901 when he was twenty, Pablo Picasso's 'Yo — Picasso' is the young artist's vehement statement of presence on the eve of his Blue Period. In a white shirt against a turquoise ground, a blazing red scarf at his throat, the artist stares at the viewer in defiant confidence. The Museu Picasso in Barcelona — founded in 1963 with gifts from the artist and his friend Jaume Sabartés — holds the world's largest collection of Picasso's early and Blue Period work.
