Pablo Picasso
Guernica Studies
1937
Among the more than forty-five preparatory studies Pablo Picasso produced in the single month of May 1937 as he worked toward his great mural 'Guernica', this sheet records an intermediate stage of his Cubist dissection of the atrocity. The wounded horse, the mother cradling a dead child, and the fallen soldier — the motifs that would anchor the final canvas — are already probed and revised in pencil and ink. The study, held today by the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, is an irreplaceable document of how Picasso welded political engagement to formal invention.
