Frida Kahlo
Viva la Vida, Watermelons
1954
Painted just weeks before her death in 1954, Frida Kahlo's 'Viva la Vida, Watermelons' is a still life of red-fleshed watermelons in which one slice carries the inscription 'VIVA LA VIDA, Coyoacán 1954 México' — at once Kahlo's signature and her testament. A final affirmation after a lifetime of illness and pain, rendered in the bold colours of Mexican folk art, the picture is a cornerstone of the Museo Frida Kahlo (Casa Azul) in Coyoacán, Mexico City.
