Tawaraya Sōtatsu
風神雷神図屏風
17th century
'Fūjin Raijin-zu' ('Wind God and Thunder God Screens') by Tawaraya Sōtatsu (c. 1570–1640) is a foundational masterpiece of early Edo painting: a pair of two-fold gold-leaf screens with the green wind-demon Fūjin at the right and the white thunder-demon Raijin at the left, a vast gold emptiness between them charging the composition with latent force. Held by Kennin-ji in Kyoto and designated a National Treasure, the design was repeatedly reinterpreted by later Rinpa masters Ogata Kōrin and Sakai Hōitsu.
