Auguste Rodin
The Thinker (Rodin)
1904
The cast of Auguste Rodin's 'The Thinker' (Le Penseur) in the plaza of the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo, is among the authorised lifetime enlargements of the figure originally conceived for the top of the 'Gates of Hell' as Dante meditating on his 'Inferno'. Acquired through the Matsukata Collection, the bronze stands as the museum's signature outdoor sculpture and a familiar landmark of Tokyo's Ueno cultural quarter.
