Michael Avi-Yonah
Second Temple Model
1966
Built by the archaeologist Michael Avi-Yonah and installed in 1966, the 1:50-scale 'Second Temple Model' reconstructs Jerusalem as it stood on the eve of the First Jewish–Roman War in AD 66, just before the Temple's destruction in AD 70. Covering some 2,000 m² on the grounds of the Israel Museum, the stone model painstakingly recreates the Temple Mount, Herod's Palace, the Antonia Fortress, and other landmarks according to the archaeological evidence of its time. It stands beside the Shrine of the Book at the heart of the museum's Jewish history display.
