Armand Bartos & Frederick Kiesler
Shrine of the Book
1965
The Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum, designed by Armand Bartos and Frederick Kiesler and opened in 1965, is the building that permanently houses the Dead Sea Scrolls. Its white domed roof echoes the lids of the clay jars in which the scrolls were found at Qumran; the black wall opposite expresses the dualism of light and dark in the Essene writings. Beneath the dome, a spiralling display cylinder descends several levels, with the full Great Isaiah Scroll unfurled around its rim.
