Where Do We Come From?
1897
Paul Gauguin painted 'Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?' in Tahiti in 1897–1898, a nearly four-metre panorama reading right to left from birth through maturity to old age. Conceived — the artist claimed — as his final testament after the news of his daughter's death, and before an unsuccessful suicide attempt, it is the most ambitious and philosophically searching canvas of Gauguin's Polynesian years and one of the great 20th-century highlights of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
