Vincent van Gogh
Postman Joseph Roulin
1888
One of the 'Portraits of Joseph Roulin' that Vincent van Gogh painted in Arles in 1888 and 1889. The postman of Arles, in his deep-blue postal uniform and luxuriant beard, became Van Gogh's closest local friend — repeatedly helping the artist through crises — and sat for numerous portraits, as did his entire family. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts' version is one of the most reproduced images from this remarkable cycle of working-class portraits.
