Golden Rose
1330
The 'Golden Rose of Basel' (c. 1330), produced in the papal workshop at Avignon, is a golden flower set with precious stones, designed as the ceremonial gift that the Pope traditionally presented on Laetare Sunday (mid-Lent) to a particularly devout sovereign, city, or church. The rose given to Basel is one of the supreme achievements of late-Gothic goldsmithing and is today a centrepiece of the Musée de Cluny, the Museum of the Middle Ages in Paris.
