Albert Bierstadt
A Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie
1866
Painted around 1866 by Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902), 'A Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie' is one of the grandest canvases of the late Hudson River School. Named for Bierstadt's wife, the central peak rises beneath a bank of dark storm clouds pierced by a single shaft of sunlight, while in the foreground Native American figures and their horses appear minuscule against the sublime landscape. Blending the Düsseldorf school's technical polish with the American West's expansiveness, the work became an icon of 19th-century American romantic imperialism and is a centrepiece of the Brooklyn Museum's American galleries.
