Judy Chicago
The Dinner Party
1979
'The Dinner Party' (1974–1979), created collaboratively under Judy Chicago's direction over five years, is a monumental feminist installation comprising a triangular dinner table 14.6 m on each side with place settings for 39 women from Western history — from the Primordial Goddess to Georgia O'Keeffe. Each setting includes an embroidered runner, a ceramic chalice, and a porcelain plate bearing an imagery ranging from abstracted forms to explicit vulvar motifs. Below the table, the 'Heritage Floor' bears the names of 999 further women on hand-inscribed tiles. A landmark of 1970s feminist art, it has been the centrepiece of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum since 2007.
