Bust of Flora

c. 1500

The marble 'Flora Bust', bought by the Berlin museums in 1909 as a supposed autograph Leonardo da Vinci, became the subject of one of the most famous attribution controversies of the 20th century: documentary and technical evidence has repeatedly suggested it is in fact the work of the English 19th-century sculptor Richard Cockle Lucas. Whether or not Leonardo's hand is involved, the case itself has become a textbook example of museum connoisseurship. It is held today by the Bode Museum in Berlin.
