Quentin Matsys
The Money Changer and His Wife
1514
Quentin Matsys's 'The Moneylender and His Wife' (1514) depicts an Antwerp money-changer weighing gold coins on a balance while his wife turns from her illuminated prayer-book to glance at the hoard. On the table, a convex mirror catches the reflection of a church window and a distant figure, condensing greed, materialism, and piety into one picture. A foundational work of Netherlandish genre painting, it is a centrepiece of the Louvre's Northern galleries.
