Donatello
David (bronze)
c. 1440s
Donatello's bronze 'David' (c. 1440s) is the first life-size free-standing male nude cast since antiquity and a landmark of early Renaissance sculpture. The young shepherd stands in classical contrapposto, sword in hand and foot placed on the severed head of Goliath, lost in contemplative reverie. Originally displayed in the courtyard of the Medici palace, it has since the 19th century been the most famous single work in the Bargello in Florence.
