Claude Monet
Lily Pond
1919
From Claude Monet's first major Giverny 'Water Lily Pond' series of 1899 — the cycle in which the Japanese-style wooden footbridge arches across the lily pond beneath trailing willows in a shimmering green-and-violet palette. Paintings from this breakthrough group are today dispersed across the Musée d'Orsay, the Met, the National Gallery (London), and the NGA Washington as the starting point of Monet's lifelong 'Water Lilies' project.
