Pablo Picasso
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (Study)
1907
A preparatory study for Pablo Picasso's revolutionary 1907 painting 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon'. Using forms borrowed from African masks and ancient Iberian sculpture, Picasso fractured the bodies and faces of the five women into sharp geometric planes — the opening move of Cubism. The finished canvas is at MoMA in New York; the surviving sheaf of preparatory studies is divided between the Museu Picasso in Barcelona and the Musée national Picasso–Paris, enabling scholars to trace the painting's development.
