Jeff Koons
Balloon Dog
1994
Among the icons of Jeff Koons's 'Celebration' series, 'Balloon Dog' translates a children's party-favour balloon twist into a more-than-one-tonne stainless-steel sculpture finished in transparent automotive paint. The Museu Coleção Berardo in Lisbon holds the magenta version, its mirror-polished skin warping every face and gallery detail into a seamless chrome field. Confronting kitsch and monumentality simultaneously, Koons produced the sculpture in five unique colours — Blue, Magenta, Yellow, Orange, Red — between 1994 and 2000; for years the series held auction records for any living artist.
