Chun Kwang-young
Aggregation 08-JL034
2008
'Aggregation 08-JL034' (2008) by the Korean contemporary artist Chun Kwang Young (b. 1944) is a three-dimensional wall sculpture built from thousands of small triangular packets of hand-dyed mulberry paper (hanji) fixed onto a styrofoam armature. Each paper fragment is torn from old Korean medical wrappers and antique books, its printed characters still visible — Chun's way of presenting a 'society' as the accumulation of individual stories. The bristling, geometric surface merges the delicacy of traditional Korean papercraft with the ambition of contemporary installation. The Busan Museum of Art holds this work as one of the defining examples of Chun's long 'Aggregation' series.
