Conservatory Garden
1982
Perched on the upper levels of the Barbican Centre's concrete brutalist megastructure in the City of London, the Conservatory is a glasshouse garden designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon that opened with the centre in 1984. Under arched concrete vaulting, some 2,000 species of tropical and desert plants flourish beside sculpture installations, making it the second-largest conservatory in London. Open to the public mainly on weekends, it is one of the most atmospheric secrets of the Barbican arts complex — a rare fusion of industrial heritage, horticulture, and contemporary culture.
