Boy

'Boy' (1999–2000), by the Australian hyperrealist sculptor Ron Mueck, is a 5-metre-tall silicone sculpture of a crouching adolescent clutching his knees, permanently installed at the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark. Every hair, pore, and vein is rendered in photographic detail, yet the colossal scale turns the ordinarily banal figure into something haunting and surreal. Commissioned for the Millennium Dome in London in 2000 and subsequently acquired by ARoS, the work has become the museum's signature piece and one of the definitive examples of Mueck's career-long play with distorted scale.
