Spoonbridge and Cherry

1988

Designed by Claes Oldenburg and his partner Coosje van Bruggen in 1988 for the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden of the Walker Art Center, 'Spoonbridge and Cherry' is a 15.7-metre-long stainless-steel spoon that arches across a shallow pond, balancing an enormous red aluminium cherry at its bowl. A thin jet of water rises from the cherry's stem and drips down its surface throughout the warmer months. The work is the defining example of Oldenburg and Van Bruggen's joint practice of translating everyday objects into playful public monuments, and has become an icon of the Minneapolis skyline.
