The Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt operates without a permanent collection, devoting itself entirely to five to seven large temporary exhibitions per year. Since opening in 1986 beside the Römerberg it has become one of the most ambitious contemporary-and-modern exhibition halls in the German-speaking world, staging retrospectives of Picabia, Basquiat, Jenny Holzer, and Gianni Colombo alongside surveys of Middle Eastern contemporary art and revisions of the Bauhaus legacy. Co-producing regularly with partner museums in Europe and the United States, the Schirn has anchored Frankfurt's place on the international blockbuster circuit.
