Shanghai Biennale Installations
2012-present
First staged in 1996, the Shanghai Biennale is mainland China's largest international contemporary-art event, held every two years. Since 2012 its principal venue has been the Power Station of Art (PSA) — a converted 1980s power plant on the Huangpu River with a signature 165-metre chimney — in Shanghai. Themes have ranged from 'Proregress' (2018) to 'Bodies of Water' (2020) and 'Cosmos Cinema' (2023), each bringing large-scale installations, video, and performance by artists from some forty countries into conversation across the plant's cavernous halls. The Biennale is a centre of gravity for Chinese contemporary art's global dialogue.
