Diego Rivera
The Flower Carrier
1935
Diego Rivera's 'The Flower Carrier' ('El Cargador de Flores', 1935) shows an Indigenous Mexican farmer crawling on all fours beneath an enormous basket of yellow calla lilies as his wife steadies the load. A canonical image of Rivera's political critique of the weight that capitalism lays on Indigenous labour, it is one of the defining works of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's collection of Mexican modernism.
