Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Luncheon of the Boating Party
1881
Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 'Luncheon of the Boating Party' (1880–1881) gathers fourteen of the artist's friends, fellow Impressionists, and future wife (Aline Charigot, playing with her puppy at the left) on the balcony of Maison Fournaise on the Île de Chatou after a long Sunday lunch. The 1.3 × 1.7 m canvas is widely considered the summit of Impressionist group portraiture; collector Duncan Phillips pawned family assets to acquire it in 1923, and it has been the signature work of The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., ever since.
